What You Need to Know About Covid Boosters

We know the conversation around Covid boosters is confusing.

Yesterday the FDA approved Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna’s updated booster shots. These boosters are aimed to target the highly contagious BA.5 Omicron variant. But we understand that you may still have some questions about whether you and your family really need more doses or not.

What should you know?

  • Boosters are recommended for the general public because data is showing that protection against mild and moderate COVID-19 via the initial vaccine series declines over time — particularly for those who were vaccinated some time ago, the immunocompromised, and even in kids.

  • The Pfizer-BioNTech booster has been authorized for use as a single booster dose in individuals ages 12 and up.

  • The Moderna booster has been authorized for use as a single booster dose in individuals ages 18 and up.

  • The FDA has approved Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna boosters for use as a single booster dose for those individuals who have previously received the two-dose primary series and for those individuals who have received the primary series in addition to one or two boosters. Those listed individuals are eligible for the updated booster after at least two months following their last Covid vaccination.

How do you know if you actually need a booster?

Understanding your Covid-19 immunity can be complicated. If you're eligible for a booster but aren't convinced you need another dose, consult your Ms.Medicine provider. They can help you make a decision based on your individual benefits and risks.
